Women Throughout the Decades

The amendment guaranteeing women voting rights is nearly 100 years old, but women have only become regulars in major parties' presidential nomination fights. The slow creep into presidential campaigns reflects a larger trend: Women make up a bigger share of national and state lawmakers than ever, and yet the share of women in major political positions remains disproportionately low. Women make up around 19% of all members of Congress and less than 25 percent of all state legislators. They also make up six of the nation's 50 governors or 12 percent. Women have been seen as a minority when it comes to holding positions in a political office. Not only have they've been accused of not being able to do the job just because of their gender, but they have also been seen as weak. We are here to shine the light on key women that line up to the first female mayor of Oxnard, Jane Louise McCormick Tolmach.
