Jane McCormick Tolmach
Jane Louise McCormick Tolmach was born in Havre Montana on November 12th, 1921 and at the age of two, she moved with her family to Ventura, California. Later, she attended the University of California, Los Angeles to earn her bachelor’s degree in psychology and continued to earn her master’s degree in social work at Smith College. In 1948, she and her husband, Daniel moved to Oxnard where they would raise five children: James, Richard, Eve Alice, Adam, and Jonathan and concurrently, she began what would be over sixty years of service and political activism.
She worked at the county, state, and national levels for many years. In 1976 however, after losing in a campaign for State Assembly, Jane stepped away from the political scene and pursued her law degree at Southwestern University. Her goal was to familiarize herself with the technicalities of politics on a local level as this meant she could better serve the people in her community. The majority of her efforts would remain at the local levels with exception to holding positions as a delegate and alternate at the Democratic National Convention.
"She got people to follow her because of her unassuming nature. She didn't think she was better than anyone else, but she understood the issues better than most people and was able to communicate them."
From John Flynn, a close colleague of Jane's.
Jane continued to support various causes until her passing in August of 2015. The breadth of areas: county, state, and national level included, which Jane’s causes and efforts have effected throughout her life, reflect the genuine nature and passion she had for political involvement as well as her role as a daughter, wife, and mother.
