The Development of Pins and Buttons: Hubert Humphrey
Humphrey ran for the Presidential nomination in 1960 against John F Kennedy. Kennedy's campaign included his good looks, which was an advantage he had over Humphrey. At a certain point in Humphreys campaign, he was quoted as saying he "felt like an independent merchant competing against a chain". Due to his lack of funds, Humphrey's campaign pins looked cheaper than others, made with materials that cost far less than those his opponent was using. Because of these developments and the success of Kennedy's campaign, Humphrey quit the race and ran against JFK in the primaries. Humphrey's funding flat out didn't match Kennedy's, he traveled from state to state on a bus and spent only 23,000 dollars on the Virginia primary. While his counterpart Kennedy spent close to 1.5 million.
